Bankomat is the leading cash management provider in Sweden, playing a vital role in the country’s financial infrastructure. Ensuring stable operations, high security, and availability requires an IT environment that meets regulatory requirements and can evolve in line with business needs.

Bankomat provides cash services to consumers, businesses, associations, and banks. Through its well-known blue ATMs, people can withdraw and deposit cash. Bankomat’s ATMs are available in nearly 600 locations across Sweden. Around 250 of the machines also offer foreign currency services.

“Our mission is to ensure that people can withdraw and deposit cash throughout the country. For that to work, a robust cash supply chain is required — and IT is a critical component of that,” says Pier Lundmark, CIO at Bankomat.

Bankomat operates in a licensed and highly regulated environment, which affects both supplier selection and the design of the IT environment.

Iver has been Bankomat’s IT partner since 2019 and is responsible for a broad delivery covering server operations, networking, support, workplace services, and IT security. Over recent years, Bankomat has undergone an extensive transformation of its IT environment — from traditional on-premises operations to a more flexible, cloud-adjacent, and secure hybrid architecture. This technological shift has taken place in parallel with significant business changes.

“Bankomat’s cash infrastructure is critical to society. For us, it is essential that our systems remain stable, secure, and available — even when conditions change,” says Pier Lundmark.

An Expanded IT Delivery in Line with a Growing Social Mission

Over the past few years, Bankomat has implemented several major operational changes, including taking responsibility for transporting cash to and from the company’s ATMs. In connection with this, the organization has moved from a centralized setup to establishing six new local offices across the country.

This has increased the demands on the IT environment, which today must support a geographically distributed operation with multiple critical nodes, high availability, and enhanced monitoring.

“We moved from a simpler structure to an operation with multiple sites and significantly more critical systems. That places entirely different demands on how IT is designed, operated, and managed,” says Pier Lundmark.

As part of this development, Bankomat’s digital workplace and security platform have been modernized. By introducing cloud-based capabilities within Microsoft 365, modern endpoint management, and expanded security services, the company has created better conditions for efficient operations and stronger cybersecurity.

At the same time, Bankomat retains a hybrid IT architecture where critical systems run in segregated environments. Applications connected to cash transportation and cash management, for example, are handled in Iver’s isolated OpenShift platform, operated in Cleura’s Swedish cloud infrastructure.

“We always evaluate cloud services when relevant, but not everything should be placed there. We need to balance flexibility with control and avoid becoming too dependent on individual providers. Conditions change, and therefore we must build an IT environment that is robust enough to withstand disruptions and flexible enough to evolve,” says Pier Lundmark, CIO at Bankomat.
